The Hon. John Howard
Prime Minister of Australia
Parliament House
Canberra ACT 2600
Dear Mr Howard,
I am appalled at the suffering inflicted on the 7 million Australian
animals exported live each year. It is immoral that acts of cruelty and
methods of slaughter which are illegal in Australia are tolerated as soon
as these animals leave our ports.
The current fiasco involving the "Cormo Express" is just the
most recent in a long history of disastrous mismanagement, incompetence,
neglect and indifference to suffering.
With every exported animal thousands of Australian jobs in the meat industry
and downstream processing are also exported. Many of these are in rural
areas where there are few alternatives as a result of the closure of local
abattoirs; live export has directly contributed to the economic demise
of many rural communities and their significant social dislocation.
I demand that the Government immediately begins a wide ranging Inquiry
not just into the “Cormo Express” incident, but into all aspects
of the live export trade, and set a time frame for phasing out the live
animal export industry.
I am not prepared to support any political party which permits live
animal export.
This inhumane trade is uncivilized and totally inappropriate for Australia
today.
Yours sincerely,
