NEWS FLASH 15.7.06 Lebanon
Live Export Shame has been informed by our reliable sources in the Middle East that the Dens ocean ship ‘Friesian Express’ carrying over 1800 bulls from Brazil destined for Tripoli Lebanon is anchored off the coast of Lebanon unable to access the port in order to unload due to the embargo of Lebanese ports by the Israeli Navy.
We were informed that the company has confirmed the ship has enough feed for approximately two days; however what happens after that is uncertain. The ship owners, we understand, have adopted a ‘wait and see’ position as they are reluctant to find another destination for the bulls because of costs involved.
Information to hand is that Israel will not take the animals and it is unlikely that any European country will rescue the bulls, so their fate is at this stage remains unknown and until a decision is made those surviving victims of this brutal insatiable live trade are forced to endure, at the minimum; filthy conditions on board. Understandably the owners of the ship, the very same owners of the Cormo Express, http://www.liveexportshame.com/cormo_history.htm are running for cover and the ship is proving hard to track.
We understand that although the Israeli Veterinary Services are aware of this potential disaster and have offered assistance to euthanize the cattle if the ship enters Israeli waters, it is highly unlikely access to the ship would be gained.
In the circumstances, it is unlikely that the "Friesian Express", a 25 year old "flag of convenience" ship owned by Durch company Vroon BV, and which has been a frequent visitor to, and detained by, Australia, is the only livestock carrier to be in this position. This proves that while animals are being sent to an area as volatile as the Middle East, their safety cannot be ensured, no matter how many "agreements" or "Memoranda of Understanding" exist with countries there.
Again, the live animal export trade shows itself to be the immoral, cruel and vicious industry it is. There is no concern for these sentient creatures. The insatiable greed for profit that is represented by the trade in live animals for slaughter is the prime motivator and the suffering endured by the animals is irrelevant . | |
Live Export Shame is calling on the Australian government to stop the export of animals to the Middle East permanently but as an absolute minimum, until this latest crisis is resolved. It is also seeking an assurance from the government that no Australian animals are trapped in the conflict
