Farmers warned of flystrike outbreak

Posted Mon Oct 13, 2008

The Department of Agriculture is warning sheep farmers to be on the lookout for flystrike with the onset of warmer weather.

The department has received several reports of increased blowfly activity and believes flystrike will be a serious issue for farmers this year.

Researcher David Bowran says producers need to be vigilant and start shearing sheep and using chemicals treatments to prevent the condition.

Mr Bowran says farmers should check their stock at least every two days for any sign of flystrike.

"Many people have already started to report significantly increased activity with blowflies and flystrike becoming quite common. It seems that the drier conditions may have actually helped flies go through winter," he said.
