WA abattoir shuts due to stock shortage

Thursday, 18/06/2009

A Western Australian sheep and goat abattoir has indefinitely closed its doors because of supply problems.

It's not unusual for abattoirs in WA to close at this time of year for scheduled maintenance.

But Geraldton Meat Exports has told AQIS that its had to close due to lack of supply.

The abattoir's manager Paul Jones blames wild dogs and the increasing popularity of live export.

"The live exporters are chasing 50,000 or 80,000 every fortnight to go on boats," he says.

"We process around 180,000 goats and around 120,000 sheep.

"But the availability of sheep at the moment has become very restricted."
