Banned wild dog traps to be reintroduced in Victoria

Victorian farmers and doggers will be allowed to use Lane's traps to trap wild dogs from the start of next year.

The State Government is reintroducing the rubber jawed traps, which were banned by the former Labor Government in 2008 because of animal welfare concerns.

Former dog trapper and high country farmer Gordon Moon says the Lane's traps will be a great asset.

"I think it's an excellent trap, because they've got a much bigger catch area," he said.

"When you've got 2,000 square kilometres to try and catch dogs, you need something going for you.

"I hadn't had any trouble with dogs chewing their feet off.

"Once they put the rubber on the jaws, no dogs chewed any feet off on me, and I didn't have any broken legs.
