Hunt for cruel family dog killer.

THE RSPCA is hunting for the culprit who killed a family pet and dumped it in the Swan River while its owners were interstate.

City of Bayswater Rangers were called to Claughton Reserve at 11am on December 4 after a white Kelpie cross, called Missy, was found wrapped in a large white sheet with a blue and black flower pattern on it.

Missy has black colouring on her face and ears and was wearing a collar with a City of Stirling tag attached to it.

An RSPCA spokesman said Missy was taken from Langworth Road in Balcatta, through Katanning Street, Bayswater, to the reserve.

The owners of the dog were in Sydney at the time.

A post mortem revealed the dog had been deliberately killed.

The RSPCA is calling for anyone with information or who may have seen something suspicious on December 4 or the days preceding to contact the RSPCA's Cruelty hotline on 1300 278 3589.

Animal cruelty carries penalties of up to $50,000 and five years imprisonment under the Animal Welfare Act 2002.
