A 62-year-old woman in the Northern Territory has been fined $5,000 after 14 horses on her property were found to be malnourished.

After being reported to police in February this year, 29 horses were examined and removed from the block in the Darwin River region.

This week the owner pleaded guilty in the Darwin Magistrates Court to the charge of failing to take sufficient care of the horses.

NT Department of Housing, Local Government and Regional Services senior executive director Rob Kendrick says the sentence sends a strong message to the community that animal cruelty is not acceptable.

"There were a range of diseases, and while our inspectors were there, one of the horses was actually attacked by a dog on the property.

"The [instances] ranged from malnourishment to sunburn to other internal infestations.

"All people who have pets and animals have a responsibility to look after those animals."
