Breeders found guilty of animal cruelty

A former Dannevirke dog breeder and his wife have been found guilty of animal cruelty in the worst domestic case the SPCA says it has dealt with.

David Neil Balfour and Daryl Kirsty Reid Balfour appeared in Palmerston North District Court this morning on three animal cruelty charges involving almost 250 cats and dogs.

They were each found guilty on two charges of failing to ensure the health and behavioural needs of 87 dogs and 161 cats.

They were also convicted of ill-treating the cats but found not guilty on a fourth charge of ill treating the dogs.

The judge took less than two minutes to deliver his verdict but he also provided a 300 page summary of his judgement.

The case dates back four years ago when the Balfour's animal breeding business, a former Woodville piggery, was raided by the SPCA.

David Balfour is a former dog show judge for the New Zealand kennel club.

The SPCA alleged the cats were kept in cramped, poorly ventilated and diseased quarters and dogs showed signs of severe stress.

SPCA senior inspector James Boyd said half of the cats had to be put to sleep.

"Certainly it's the worst case the SPCA has ever encountered involving companion animals in this country," Boyd said.

The couple have been remanded on bail for sentencing in mid-February.
