The Indonesian government has slashed the quota of live cattle exported from Australia to 283,000 in 2012, from 522,000 in 2010. The chief executive of the agribusiness Elders, Malcolm Jackman, told the company's annual meeting last week that it would look for new live cattle export markets, including Russia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and Qatar, because of the continuing uncertainty in Indonesia (''Live cattle exports miss annual target'', December 26).

These countries have poor human rights and far less animal welfare or rights.

We can only imagine the cruelty Lyn White, from Animals Australia, would uncover in slaughter houses there.

Thousands of Australians rallied, spoke to their politicians, wrote letters and emails telling our government we wanted live exports banned when we saw horrendous footage from Indonesia and the Middle East on our TVs. When are we going to be heard?
