Middle east middle class want supermarket meat.

Australian beef and lamb exports to the Middle East will increasingly be chilled, and not arrive live by ship.

The rising middle class in Arab states from in northern Africa, through to Saudi Arabia prefer supermarkets over slaughtering an animal in their backyard.

Meat and Livestock Australia's regional manager for the Middle East, Lachlan Bowtell says Australian beef exports to the region rose by 40 per cent during 2011.

"There's been a shift away from traditional retail, what's known in Asia as wet markets, we call 'souks'.

"So the souk, the local market is diminishing, it's about a 15 to 18 per cent share of retail at the moment.

"Whereas you're major supermarket and hypermarket, they're really cracking on, and they want clean, safe and delicious halal guaranteed product."
