A university researcher says consumers are increasingly wanting assurance of animal welfare conditions when they buy meat.

Rachel Ankeny from the University of Adelaide is researching the ethics behind what consumers buy.

She says the research with consumers has shown a focus on how animals are raised.

"The animal welfare concerns have had a bit of a spike," she says.

"That's been also fuelled as you probably know by Coles and Woolworths and other big supermarkets really promoting a lot of lines which have animal welfare concerns in the mix."

"I think that trend will continue."
