Call for a new animal welfare watchdog - MP Melissa Parke

Call for new watchdog.

Animal welfare is not a priority for Department of Agriculture staff working in overseas offices, highlighting the need for an independent office of animal welfare, Labor MP Melissa Parke says.

Ms Parke yesterday asked department representatives at a Foreign Affairs inquiry into overseas representation why their submissions failed to include animal welfare as an issue for it in overseas operations.

In May last year, revelations of cruelty to Australian cattle in Indonesia sparked new rules for animal welfare for exporters. Ms Parke said the department called it an ''oversight''.

She said the cruelty at a Sydney abattoir revealed this week further proved the need for animal welfare to be regulated by bodies outside state and federal agriculture departments.
