Indonesian abattoir did not meet animal welfare standards 05.01.2012

An independent audit of animal welfare in Indonesian abattoirs has found that some aspects of animal welfare were not acceptable according to Australian Government guidelines.

Around 120 reports into transport, feedlots and abattoirs have been prepared since the Government introduced new supply chain assurance guidelines after animal welfare issues were raised on the ABC's 4 Corners program last year.

One of the reports, prepared by SAI Global, finds that an abattoir supplied by the North Australian Cattle Company, owned by Elders and based in Darwin, did not comply with standards when audited in early October last year.

The audit report states that during the first audit:

CEO of SAI Global, Tony Scotton says that where standards are not met, clients have the chance to take corrective action.

"It was one of many abattoirs, and the other abattoirs did not have this issue.

"In this instance we discovered that there was a non-conformance in relation to a particular practice.

"I might say that these animals were stunned as well, but the actual slaughter process involved some processes that did not conform with the requirements.

"The organisation subsequently underwent substantiative training with all the operators in the abattoir.

"We went back ten days later to confirm that appropriate training had occurred, that the practices were now correct, and following that issued a final report to that effect.

"There were other instances of minor issues, in one instance there was some slippage of the animals on a ramp, that was identified and corrected.

"Generally speaking there hasn't been a whole raft of serious issues that we've uncovered at the abattoirs that we've looked at."
