Animals Australia gives new Indonesian footage to DAFF.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has confirmed it is reviewing more footage of alleged animal cruelty in Indonesian abattoirs.

The footage was supplied to the department by Animals Australia last Friday.

No details of what it contains, when the footage was fillmed or whether it involves Australian cattle and Australian-accredited exporter supply chains has been provided.

The Age newspaper has reported the footage was recorded by Indonesian investigators for the animal welfare group.

Minister for agriculture Joe Ludwig’s office provided the following statement on the issue this morning.

“The Government is implementing significant reforms to the live animal export trade.

“These include supply chain assurances that trace animals from port to slaughter house and make exporters responsible for their supply chain on a consignment by consignment basis.

“I am aware that the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has received a complaint regarding animal welfare in two Indonesian abattoirs.

“As the regulator, the Secretary of the department will now investigate the matter.

“It is appropriate that we allow this process to be completed.

“Following the investigation, the regulator will take appropriate compliance action, if required.”
