Ignorant Liberal Senator Ronaldson lashes out at slaughterhouse footage
« Reply #1 on: March 04, 2012, 04:15:21 PM »
Liberal Senator Michael Ronaldson has attacked Lateline and Animal Liberation Australia for broadcasting footage of animal cruelty shot at an abattoir in NSW, which he says may have been obtained illegally.

Transcript

EMMA ALBERICI: And just a few minutes ago in Canberra, Lateline and Animal Liberation Australia came under sustained attack from Liberal Senator Michael Ronaldson for broadcasting pictures earlier this month of cruelty at the Hawkesbury Valley abattoir on the outskirts of Sydney. The images depicted animals being bashed and inappropriately slaughtered. The senator accused this program of being irresponsible and reckless, and said Animal Liberation Australia may have obtained footage passed on to Lateline illegally.

MICHAEL RONALDSON, VICTORIAN LIBERAL SENATOR: The fact they've exposed some evidence of illegality is no good reason for them to be exempt from prosecution. This, of course I acknowledge, is a matter for the New South Wales authorities. What also must be considered, however, is whether a broadcaster should be permitted to behave as the ABC has done in this instance. No broadcaster should be provided encouragement for trespass, nor should the law allow them.

EMMA ALBERICI: The ABC did not instigate the shooting of the vision. Animal Liberation have already publicly stated that the vision was shot by an employee of the abattoir.
