Live exports days are numbered says Barrister
« Reply #1 on: March 12, 2012, 03:46:20 PM »
A lawyer who advocates for animal rights says the live cattle export industry's days are numbered.

Graeme McEwen chairs an organisation called the 'Barristers Animal Welfare Panel'.

It's a group of more than 100 barristers from across Australia which aims to promote law reform in animal welfare.

Mr McEwen says the community expects a higher standard of conduct than the live export industry will ever be able to deliver.

"Whilst animals live, they should be treated humanely. Period. That is what the public wants," he said.

"I think time is limited for the live export animal industry, not only with Indonesia but for the Middle East.

"The new standards that have been bought in by Senator Ludwig apply in the Middle East as much as they do Indonesia.

"I think we are looking at a matter of only a few years."
