Animal cruelty boss joins animal exports campaign.

The new chief executive of the RSPCA has been in Thanet to meet campaigners who have been protesting against animals being shipped from Ramsgate to the Continent.

Gavin Grant has recently taken over at the helm of the animal charity which is based in Horsham in Sussex.

The RSPCA is opposed to the long-distance transport of live animals for further fattening and slaughter and has raised concerns about the boat used for the crossings - a slow moving vessel which was originally designed to transport tanks across rivers.

He said: "The thought of living, breathing animals, some only a couple of weeks old, packed into lorries for hours on end, driven thousands of miles across Europe, sickens me. "
