CARS were hit with falling sheep when a truck rolled on a freeway overpass in Melbourne's west last night.

The truck carrying 400 sheep overturned on the Western Ring Rd overpass at Laverton North about 9pm.

Hundreds of dead and injured sheep were strewn on the Princes Highway below.

At least three cars on the Princes Highway inbound lanes were written off.

A 30-year-old man in one of the cars, which rolled four times, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Three other people including the truck driver were assessed at the scene and escaped injury.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman was astounded nobody was seriously hurt.

"It's miraculous," she said.

The MFB said the truck was doing 100km/h when the crash happened.

"The scene was chaos with traffic trying to avoid the bewildered and injured animals in the dark," a spokesman said.

The RSPCA said more than 50 sheep had to be put down and a "very low" number survived.

"Our inspectors described it as the worst accident that had ever seen," a spokeswoman said.

The two inspectors remained at the scene until 4am.

Attempts to move the truck with a heavy tow vehicle were unsuccessful with the wreck so heavily wrapped around the overpass it was too difficult to move.

Geelong-bound traffic slowed to a one-lane crawl, many cars slowing down for a look as they passed the scene.

The smash caused significant delays and motorists were warned to avoid the area.

Heavy haulage equipment was brought in to remove the truck.

The trailer was precariously  was hanging off the overpass with some sheep still alive inside.

The road is now open.
