Buffalo exports shot down DAVID WOOD   |  June 22nd, 2012
Buffalo live export trade destroyed by ban
THE suspension of the live cattle trade to Indonesia last year has "completely destroyed" the export of buffalo, the industry says.
Northern Territory Buffalo Industry Council vice-president Michael Swart said the live buffalo export trade to Indonesia had essentially been killed by new requirements for slaughter.
Mr Swart said the problem was that buffalo had thicker skulls at the front than cattle and there were problems with stunning them before they were killed, as happens with cattle.
While stunning has not been made mandatory by the Federal Government, it has been adopted by many abattoirs killing Australian animals in Indonesia.
