Woman fined for sheep cruelty in western Victoria

A 60-year-old woman has been fined $4,000 over the mistreatment of sheep at several properties near Edenhope, in western Victoria.

The woman pleaded guilty to nine charges of animal cruelty after inspectors found severely overstocked paddocks with malnourished sheep.

Rod Badman, from the Department of Primary Industries, says it's unusual for officers to find such a large number of mistreated livestock.

"It really depends on the attitude of the owners," he said.

"We find that we go to them and see a problem, they are happy to do something. In this case, the owner either didn't know what to do or couldn't make a decision about what should be done."
