New Zealand phases out battery hens By Caitlyn Gribbin

The New Zealand Government will phase out battery cages for egg farming and ban them from 2022.
From today, no new battery cages can be installed on New Zealand farms, as part of a phase-out similar to the Tasmanian Government's plan to ban the cages.
Animal welfare groups say the cages are cruel and deny basic natural behaviours to hens confined in them.
Michael Guthrie, from the New Zealand Egg Producers Federation, says scrapping half the cages within four years, as required, will be difficult.
But he predicts Australia will go down a similar track and can learn from New Zealand.
"Our counterparts in Australia have been watching with interest as to the development of the legislation and they've actually got the benefit of seeing how and what to do," he said.
"We've gone first, the United States is going exactly the same way.
"Interestingly enough, they've been given, I think, 25 years to do it."
