Live export cruelty hard to stop: Ludwig

FEDERAL Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig says it's unfortunate but there will always be incidents of cruelty in the live export trade.

His comments come two days after ABC TV's 7.30 program screened shocking videos of abattoir workers in Israel tormenting cattle allegedly from Australia.

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has launched an investigation into the matter.

Mr Ludwig confirmed Israeli authorities are assisting the department.

"I hope to see it finalised as soon as possible," he told reporters in Brisbane on Thursday.

"The Israeli authorities have taken a very dim view of this.

"They're also mounting a criminal investigation against that particular abattoir."

When asked whether the government could ever fully stamp out the cruel treatment of Australian animals in the $1 billion live export trade, the minister pointed to the new compliance system.

"Where once we didn't know what happened, now we have each individual consignment. We know which abattoir they go into; we know which audit is produced on that particular consignment. All of that information is publicly available," Mr Ludwig said.

But the minister conceded there was no way to ever completely guarantee every foreign importer of Australian livestock would not be cruel to the animals.

"There will always be, unfortunately, people who do the wrong thing," he said.

"That's why we've got a compliance system in place - to make sure we can regulate the exporters, attach strong action against those exporters who do the wrong thing."
