Release of ESCAS investigation report - Indonesia DAFF website

7 February 2013

The Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) has released its investigation report in response to alleged non-compliance with Australian regulations for livestock exports in Indonesia.

On 8 October 2012 DAFF received a complaint from Animals Australia alleging non-compliance with animal welfare for Australian cattle exported to Indonesia.

It was alleged cattle were traditionally slaughtered in West Java on 27 – 28 September 2012.

Traditional slaughter does not meet animal welfare guidelines and is not an approved method of slaughter under Australia’s regulatory framework, the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS).

The investigation considered all available information.

The Department sought and obtained information from a range of sources including industry and Animals Australia and concluded that there was no evidence to support the allegation.

There is therefore no reason for DAFF to take any regulatory action in this case.

No photographic evidence was provided by the complainant and the original informant was not prepared to be questioned.
The report is available on the DAFF website.

Reports into allegations of non-compliance with the regulatory framework are uploaded on the DAFF website as current routine practice.
