CARERS have been appalled by a spate of kangaroo mutilations in which testicles, pouches and ears have been cut off.
Wildlife Victoria chief executive Karen Masson said volunteer wildlife rescuers had responded to cases where kangaroos were found with their ears cut off, males had their testicles removed and female kangaroos had pouches cut from their body.

Ms Masson said mutilated kangaroos had been found in areas including Oaklands Junction, Greenvale, Donnybrook, Sunbury and Wallan.

She said they did not know why the kangaroo body parts had been removed but said she was concerned about the fate of other kangaroos in the areas.

"It is not yet known if the animals are being intentionally killed for their body parts, or if the parts have been removed from those already deceased," she said.

"This is a very sad trend that someone would be perpetrating these vial acts on our iconic wildlife."

RSPCA senior inspector Simon Primrose said they would work to bring those responsible before the courts.

"The RSPCA would be appalled if it is established that any of these kangaroos have been harmed or killed intentionally for whatever reason."

Anyone found guilty of cruelty to animals faces penalties of up to $69,000 fine, up to two years imprisonment and being banned from being in charge of an animal for up to 10 years.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the RSPCA on 9224 2222.
