Jumps review panel to investigate death of horse at Warrnambool

11.6.2013

Opponents of jumps racing say the death of a horse following a steeplechase in south-western Victoria will reignite calls for the sport to be banned.

The horse, Reckless Rat, was withdrawn during a race at Warrnambool due to injury and later put down.

Racing Victoria's jumps review panel will investigate the death.

Ward Young from the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses says there is increasing pressure on the Premier, Denis Napthine, to end jumps racing.

"I think the most recent death in jumps racing of Reckless Rat will just serve to alienate our premier with constituents who are appalled by seeing this constant animal cruelty every time a horse dies in jumps racing," he said.
