: Indonesian cattle problems keep NT stock inspectors busy 20.12.2011

Northern Territory stock inspectors this year have been forced to examine three times more cattle than they did two years ago.

Chief veterinary officer Brian Radunz says 220,000 cattle were inspected this year, compared to about 60,000 in 2009.

He says more cattle are travelling domestically to southern markets because of reduced live exports to Indonesia and the trade suspension in June.

"The major changes have been the slaughter animals having to go south, but there has been some store cattle going south as well," he said.

"But with the recent announcement that the Indonesians will reduce the number of import permits, the workload may increase even further next year."
