Stricken sheep finally unloaded in Pakistan

An Australian boat carrying 22,000 head of sheep rejected in Bahrain has finally unloaded at Karachi in Pakistan.

The Australian Livestock Exporters' Council has confirmed the boat "completed discharging this morning".

The sheep are infected with scabby mouth, or orf, a contagious virus that attacks damaged skin areas on the lips of sheep and can infect humans.

ALEC and the exporter, Wellard Rural Exports, are meeting in Perth today to discuss the situation and decide who will provide media comment.

Meanwhile, the immediate past president of the Cattle Council, Greg Brown, says the incident has all livestock exporters worried.

"I think it's in a reasonably serious position at the moment, the live trade, and I don't think these people need anything added to their woes," he said.

"This is one of those things that would just send a shiver down your spine.

"I just think it'd resonate with cattle people, considering what they've been through in the last 12 or 18 months."
