: Live export industry only responds to crises says RSPCA 6.11.2012

The RSPCA says the whole Pakistan incident shows that the live export of Australian livestock "isn't worth the risk", and should be phased out.  Chief executive Heather Neil says the live export trade is "senseless" from both an animal welfare and economic perspective.

She says the industry only makes changes to improve animal welfare after incidents of cruelty are brought to light by animal welfare advocates.

But no matter what the Australian industry or Government do, they cannot ultimately guarantee the welfare of livestock sent overseas.

"The RSPCA has long said that we need to move away from live exports to a meat-only trade, and I think the time has really come for us to make that move now. We are very supportive of any
Australian Government aid that goes into animal welfare in any part of the world. If we're wanting to make improvements to animal welfare, that's the way we should be doing it."
