NZ live sheep ban due to continued risk.

While the question of whether or not to ban live sheep exports continues to divide opinion in Australia, New Zealand already has a ban in place.
New Zealand still exports live beef and dairy cattle, horses and goats, but no sheep.

It introduced the ban in 2003, after 4000 sheep died while stranded on a ship headed for Saudi Arabia.

President of the Federated Farmers of New Zealand, Bruce Wills, says the live sheep trade wasn't worth continuing.

"The worry we had is the repetitional risk of a very small number of sheep being transported live to other parts of the world was just too great against the very large processed export industry we have with sheep meat," he said.

Last year New Zealand exported $242 million worth of live animals
