Labor backbenchers against live exports will spend the summer coming up with a model for a new Office of Animal Welfare.

The Caucus Live Animal Export Working Group, which wants to see the live export trade abolished, includes MPs such as Kelvin Thompson, Graham Perrett and Janelle Saffin.

The group gained the support of the majority of Labor MPs for their proposal.
The Working Group is expected to report back to caucus by the end of February, with a model for an independent office that would develop and enforce national animal welfare standards.
The ABC understands the Minister for Agriculture, Joe Ludwig, was among those who voted to investigate a new animal welfare body. Senator Ludwig has repeatedly said the Government is committed to the live export trade into the long-term.
