No evidence of animal welfare breach in Oman

The Federal Department of Agriculture (DAFF) says it will not be investigating claims that animal welfare rules for exporting livestock were breached in Oman.

The department was told by an industry source in May that sheep were moved to a facility outside approved supply chains in Oman.

"DAFF reviewed the information, sought further information from exporters to Oman and undertook independent enquires in Oman.

"DAFF was unable to confirm the report of possible movement of sheep out of approved supply chains. No instances or leakage of Australian sheep have been identified in independent performance audit reports provided to DAFF for Oman supply chains.

"Based on this, DAFF has determined there is insufficient information to commence an investigation."

Last year, Australia exported over 20,000 sheep to Oman, down from 41,000 head in 2011.
