Conditions aboard this ship were appalling. The position of the troughs made them ready targets for faecal contamination. Excreta from the animals on the upper pens falls onto the animals in the lower pens, their food and water troughs. These animals are held below deck where there is limited ventilation. Animals held in pens above deck are subject to natural ventilation; that is, sea breeze or wind; however this leaves the animals exposed to the elements of the open sea. If the ship enters into calm seas then there is no natural ventilation (sea breeze or wind). |
