If a picture paints a thousand words then the Australian Government and live exporters better get a good supply of paper and pens to wrangle themselves out of this lot.

The following photos and video are of Australian calves.

The Maysora carried 9,500 Australian calves which were loaded in Portland on October 11 and 12 and in Fremantle, finally leaving Australia on October 18. It then sailed to Aqaba and from Aqaba to nearby Eilat, where it unloaded between November 2 and November 4. The journey of 25 days from beginning of loading to end of unloading was long, but not extremely untypical. Eilat is not a regular destination of the Maysora, and initially it was supposed to unload in Aqaba only. The importers sought an exemption from the ban on transporting animals by land from Jordan to Israel, but eventually had to change the ship's route.

The loading at both ports in Australia was witnessed by Australian animal welfarists who did not report anything exceptional. Therefore, we know that the footage is representative of the deterioration in the condition of these animals during the voyage and their arrival at the Eilat.

Calves unloaded showed symptoms of ill thrift (lack of condition), lethargy, respiration problems and lameness – clearly identified in the footage.

As to mortalities regarding this episode: liveexportshame cannot confirm exact numbers but sources in Israel itself have put the lowest estimate at 250 dead calves in the last 10 days after unloading. Mortalities while the ship was en route cannot be assessed however, even on the minimum known deaths, it represents a mortality rate in excess of a 2.5%. Reliable sources have the actual number of dead calves at least double that already stated, that is over 500.

Liveexportshame has no doubt that this report is extremely accurate. The Maysora has previous history with animal welfare organisations and the Western Australian Government relating to the complete disregard of animal welfare issues by its operators. There is also no doubt that these are Australian calves as the ear tags are clearly visible.

Everybody knows that even though these images are extremely disturbing they are in no way atypical. The facts are blatant: every shipment of live animals from Australia has the same scenario of maltreatment and unexplained high mortalties. Government is very tight lipped about the actual statistics and it is only through the diligence of our overseas operatives that light is shed on these atrocities.
